Meet the first-ever Colombian team at the world’s biggest bird race
The Birders Show, a Colombian YouTube series with the mission to make birding more accessible to people around the world, will compete at this year’s Champions of the Flyway bird race in Eilat, Israel, on March 27. We will be the first-ever team from Colombia to compete at this iconic event. There has never even been a team from South America
at Champions of the Flyway.
Champions of the Flyway isn’t just a bird race; it’s also an internationally-important fundraising effort to protect migratory bird species. Since 2014, the race has raised over $500,000 for projects tackling the illegal killing of migratory birds. This year’s event is raising funds to protect the vulnerable and rapidly decreasing Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis).
The Birders Show team consists of hosts Diego Calderón-Franco and Chris Bell, and videographers Julian Manrique and Santiago Ospina. On March 27, we will be racing across southern Israel to observe the most bird species in 24 hours, representing the world’s most bird-diverse country at one of the most important global birding events for the first time.
All the teams are also trying to raise funds to protect the Red-breasted Goose. The Birders Show’s target is $5,000, and every penny will go to stop the illegal killing of this beautiful bird.
